MORAY AND THE
SALINERAS OF MARAS
Itinerary:
We pick you up from your hotel at about 8:30 A.M. setting off in
our bus at 9:00 going out towards the north via Chincheros until
getting at:
Moray:
Archaeological complex, unique on its kind. It consists in
depressions or natural gigantic holes on the surface of the
ground which were planned to built around its outlines a system
of concentric platforms (andenes) in order to develope the
agricultura. What draws the attention is the difference in
temperature along the year between the upper platforms and those
sequentially deeper. It has a depth of 30 m. Moray, because of
its weather conditions and other features, was an important
center for the experimentation on the agriculture, specially in
the aspect of climatizing species from different weathers. Then
we go to:
Salineras
of Maras:
Located 7 kilometers away from Moray. Our destine is located
towards the east from the Maras village, the salineras, known as
salt mines, are constituted by about 3,000 little wells with an
avarage area of 5m2, built on the slope of the Qaqawiñay
mountain, in the high zone of the Pichingoto village. The
mentioned wells are filled with salted water, every eight to ten
days period, which comes from the evaporation of water. After
having occured the cristalization, certain amount, this salt is
extracted by the communers of the community which will be
processed and packed in plastic bags in order to be sent to the
markets of the región. Return to Cuzco.
