CITY TOURS
IN CUSCO
This is a one day
tour, since 1:30 pm. until 6:30pm.
In this tour you`ll visit the next sites:
The
Cathedral:
It was built over
the Inca palace of Suntur Wasi. Its construction took almost one
century (94 years). Artists from Cusco and Europe worked in its
design. The most important spots in this gigantic temple are the
chapel of the virgin of the Remedies, the Inmaculada Concepción
and others equally impressive. "El Señor de los Temblores",
(Lord of the Earthquakes), regarded as the saint of this city,
keeps this name since March 31th in 1,650, date where its image
was taken out of the Cathedral to calm down the earthquake.
Qorikancha:
It is situated in the heart of Cusco. Its construction took
place when Pachakutec governed the Tawantinsuyo and it became
one of the most important temples built by the Incas. This was
the house of the bishop who fought against the worship of the
Sun. This building was the place where chosen women were
sacrificed to the main god, the Sun. According to the Inca
cosmology, el Qorikancha was situated in the middle of the
world.
Saqsayhuaman:
It is located 2 Km to the north of Cusco. In Inca times, the
city of Cusco had the shape of a puma and its head was the
Sacsayhuaman site. However, this was destroyed by the Spaniards,
but still in these days we can see fabulous cyclopean walls,
some of them of 5 meters height and with more than 350 tons
weight. This constructions were conduced with the effort of
thousands of workers leaded by the Inca Pachakutec.
Qenqo:
It is located 3 Km away from Cusco. The word Qenqo means maze.
It was a worshiping place where we can observe a huge rock which
has several cuttings, among which the most important was the
zigzag, issue of the chicha or blood, by which this vital
element flowed. Those stones represented a cougar which woke up
with the winter solstice. Underneath the rock there are amazing
subterranean corridors.
Pukapukara:
Following the schedule this site is located at 7 Km from Cusco.
Pukapukara means "red fortress". This site was an administrative
and military center. In there we can find some aqueducts, short
terraces, passages, turrets, and niches.
Tambomachay:
8 Km away from the
city of Cusco. Well known as the Inca's bath, this Inca site was
considered a place of cult to the water.
